Join us for this showing of the award-winning documentary about the black student experience at the University of Evansville. There will be a discussion with the filmmakers and one of the narrators.
Our Story: Once The Doors Opened is an award winning (2021 IndieFILM Fest Film Award) 55 minute documentary about the first wave of black students admitted to the University of Evansville from 1934-1949. Like most higher education institutions, the University of Evansville did not allow black students due to racist segregation policies. Our Story also covers black student and black student organization from 1934 to the present. The producer Arnell Hill, director Aaron Turner, and narrator Leairra Carter, will all be attending in person to talk about their involvement and answer questions. The director is presenting a special 55 minute cut of his film as well. Also, it is available via Zoom at this address. Light refreshments will be served. So, please join us in gaining a better understanding of a neglected part of our community’s past.
